ORIGIN
The idea started when Tou Yia was looking for gifts for his nieces and nephews. He wanted to buy something that was Hmong-inspired and educational. As a designer, he naturally wanted something that was well crafted and looked beautiful, too. It was hard to find anything like this, so he created something himself. The passion project turned out to be a set of flashcards to teach animal names in Hmong, his native language.
Tou Yia, working with a team, took the flashcard product and developed it into an app that launched on the App Store.
GOALS
• Offer different games to play
• Have several languages to choose from
• Optimized for iPad and iPhone
• Flat art style for better app performance and animation experience
ART DIRECTION
The animal illustrations are still in the classic geometric style but now have a flat vector look. The flat style opens up opportunities to create engaging in-app animation experiences. The simplified art helps the app performs better, too.
